Signs of an Opioid Overdose

Know the warnings signs and what to do.

  • Choking, coughing, gurgling or snoring sounds
  • Dizziness and disorientation
  • Cold, blue or clammy skin
  • Small, constricted, pinpoint-sized pupils
  • Slow, irregular or stopped breathing
  • Unresponsiveness to voice or touch

How to Respond to an Opioid Overdose

  1. Check for response
    • Shout their name and shake their shoulders.
  2. Call 911
    • Call for medical attention if unresponsive.
  3. Administer Naloxone
    • Spray once into a nostril.
  4. Start CPR
    • Perform rescue breathing and/or chest compressions.
  5. Stay with them
    • If no improvement after 3-5 minutes, administer Naloxone in opposite nostril. Continue rescue breathing.
